Developing an eco-friendly forest management platform to fight the spread of wildfires, use resources efficiently, and restore landscapes, providing global protection against wildfire threats.
This is the objective of Horizon2020-Silvanus (Integrated technological and information platform for wildfire management), a research and innovation project funded under the European Horizon 2020 Green Deal program and coordinated by Pegaso University. The project was launched at its general assembly, which concluded today at the Principe di Napoli campus in Agerola.
During the assembly, which began on April 22nd, forty-nine partners from 23 countries worldwide (European Union, Brazil, Indonesia, and Australia) gathered to discuss and advance the project’s actions. The project, lasting 42 months (October 2022 – March 2025), is progressing towards the presentation phase of the integrated platform for wildfire prevention in May.
Following the successful implementation of pilot actions in 10 countries in 2023, where user products were tested in operational scenarios, a second period of pilot demonstrations in 2024 will conclude in Brazil with a test of the fully integrated platform.
The Silvanus platform comprises 12 products, including drones with a wireless communication system for connectivity in remote areas and a fire propagation model. Various experts support regional and national fire management activities.
The technology aims to efficiently monitor forest resources, assess biodiversity, generate more accurate fire risk indicators, and promote safety awareness among local populations affected by fires through awareness campaigns.
The project also includes educational campaigns, involving national and European institutions on the website and social media. Additionally, the citizen engagement app, available to all users, provides tools for citizens to identify and prevent fires.
